10-Year Review


The Alberta Land Stewardship Act requires the Land Use Secretariat to, at least once every 10 years, review each regional plan and report to the Stewardship Minister on its ongoing relevancy and effectiveness. The Land Use Secretariat announced commencement of the 10-year review of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan on August 22, 2024. For more information, visit the 10-Year Review​ page.

 

5-Year Evaluation

 

The Alberta Land Stewardship Act requires that the Land Use Secretariat to, at least once every 5 years, appoint a committee to evaluate the objectives and audit the policies of regional plans to determine whether either or both are meeting the purposes of the act, and report the results to the Stewardship Minister. Vision and Strategies

 

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan establishes a long-term vision for the South Saskatchewan Region and aligns provincial policies at the regional level to balance Alberta's economic, environmental and social goals. The regional plan also includes strategies for responsible energy development, sustainable farming and ranching, recreation, forest management, and nature-based tourism.

 

Amendments

 

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan was originally released in 2014.The plan was first amended in 2017 based on Cabinet's approval of Orders-in-Council to establish the Castle Provincial Park and expand the Castle Wildland Provincial Park.

 

The plan was amended again in May 2018 to reflect the creation of two new Public Land Use Zones and the corresponding landscape and recreation management plans.

Progress

 

Regional outcomes are supported by ongoing implementation of provincial strategies, as well as new region-specific strategies implemented through the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan.

Compliance

 

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan amended in 2018 replaces the previous version of the plan. Everyone must act in accordance with the latest version of the SSRP.

 

The amendment did not change nor introduce any new timing requirements regarding the filing of compliance declarations. Section 7 of the SSRP-Regulatory Details specifies that:

 

  • local government bodies must submit their compliance declaration by September 1, 2019
  • decision-making bodies were required to submit their compliance declaration by September 1, 2016.

Maps and Shapefiles

 

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan contains several maps including a Schedule D: South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Map.
