Alberta’s prosperity has created opportunities for our economy and people, but it also has created challenges for Alberta’s landscapes. Industrial activity, municipal development, infrastructure, recreation and conservation interests often are competing to use the same piece of land. There are more and more people doing more and more activities on the same piece of land. The competition between user groups creates conflict, and often puts stress on the finite capacity of our land, air, water and habitat.

Land-use Planning in Alberta

We have reached a tipping point where sticking with the old rules will not produce the quality of life we have come to expect. If we want our children to enjoy the same quality of life that current generations have, we need a new plan.

Developing a Framework

The goal of the Land-use Framework is to sustain our economy, but balance this with Albertans' social and environmental goals. Since 2005, the ideas and opinions of Albertans have played a vital role in developing the framework.

Land-use Framework

Alberta’s Land-use Framework (LUF), released in December 2008, sets out a new approach for managing the province’s land and natural resources to achieve Alberta’s long-term economic, environmental and social goals.

Our Vision and Our Future

The vision makes it clear that managing our land is a shared responsibility that involves all Albertans. Each of us has a role in determining the future of Alberta's lands.
